Day 10

March 9th

Woke up ready to go, but fell back into bed and just slept until a little after 8. Today's plan is to do some last minute shopping especially picking up my prescription, I'm hoping that they'll have it on hand. I know that the pharmacy I use back home has to order it for me 'cause it's at such a weird dosage or something along that line. Worse comes to worse I know that my trusty and always helpful pharmacist will mail it to me in Taiwan.

They say that medicine is always less expensive outside of the country, I don't mind paying less for it. But my worries are a) will they have it b) where do they get it from, is it safe? Those kind of things makes me want to make sure I have my meds before I leave the States, always better to be safe than sorry!

So, Walter took the car to work on the Farm. He's suppose to be back "later", I wonder what "later" is. Terry told me to bring out the swim suit so we can wade in the water by the beach later. I had hope to avoid this, I told her I had enough of ocean water from the wedding, but she just gave me the look and so I thought better of it. We'll see how it goes.

Several hours later:
I lost...the ocean it called to me. I frolicked in the water and payed the price, I was feeling queasy after words but all turned well when we stopped in at Costco and I was able to purchase Sprite (not as good as a 7-Up but it works in a pinch).

We shopped like crazy, I was able to fill my prescription and we came home to begin packing. Mother bought the Aeromattress that Father wanted, the only one available was a double decker queen size. Oh dear PI! It was heavy, we're hoping we got it all under 50 lbs, our luggage that is. For dinner Terry was learning how to make Chawamushi, one of my all time favorite foods. Unfortunately, water to egg ratio was a little confused and it took forever to cook. Didn't have nearly enough salt in it either, which meant of course I accidentally put too much salt in mine when I tried to sprinkle "a little" in my last bowl. Dumped a bit too much in and I'm now paying the consequence of it, my tongue feels double sized and I know I ate too much egg for my own good considering I have to fly soon.

Anyhow, I guess this will be my last post until I get to Grandmother's place later this week. Maybe I'll venture forth and find an Internet cafe in Taipei.

So until the next time I find time to sit and gather my thoughts boys 'n girls this is your keyboard friend from the kingdom of potatoes Tappy, tapping off for the night.
Toodles!

Day 8 & 9

March 7th & 8th

NOTHING HAPPENED! I stayed home, fighting the cold and I think I'm winning the war. Terry and Walter has been in and out, mother went out shopping with father yesterday and Terry drove him to the airport. I was too sleepy to get up and go out with them because I know they'll make side trips to pick up this and that.

Mother and I will continue onto the 2nd leg of our excursion tomorrow with a red-eye flight out to SFO and onto Taiwan. We'll be staying with father's oldest sister, this should prove to be interesting.

Oh yes, be sure to check out my photo album. You can access it from my profile, if anyone wants more pictures or the original files which are much much larger than what you see leave a message and I'll get it to you.

Day 7

March 6th

Most guest left this morning. I had stayed the night at my parent's rental so I helped check them out of the place. Uncle and Aunt was leaving around noon so we all met up with Terry 'n Walter for lunch. Bernard, being the only one left from a large group from San Francisco came to lunch too. He had a nice large PT Cruiser which came to good use for us to transfer luggage from Uncle's car.

After parting company, we went to whale watch. It was an hour before we can begin to buy ticket and another hour after that before the ship takes off, 2 hours in the sun to kill. I went into the stores to pick up some postcards. By the time I returned Yun and Phil were playing a card game called "Twos" Bernard and I join in (aka Revolution), fun game. We played until well into the tour guides land presentation. Funny thing that happened, Terry and Walter had forgotten to include themselves while booking the tickets, thankfully some folks did not show up and they were able to purchase their tickets.

We saw tons of humpback whales. There was very little inactivity, we were even mugged by three of them. The rule about that is since humpback whales are listed as endangered the ship cannot get within so many feet of it, but there's no rule about them approaching us. Three of them swam around us and under us. The guides threw some mic down in the water so we can hear them communicate, sounded like a NASCAR race to me.

After we returned and we ate then off to bed! More meds for me.

Day 6

March 5

Today is the day! What a day!
So our morning started off with a "WE'RE LATE!" what a surprise... Off to the nail salon, I went first so that Walter can pick me up while Terry finishes her and can run to different errands, I had my fill of being driven around town at a dizzying pace and finally put my foot down with a firm NO THANK YOU -desu! While at the salon, I met the cutest little girl "Jennifer" and made origami with my spare paper. I had fallen asleep the night before without getting done with my origami so I had to lug everything with me wherever I went. It was the Elephants, they were the last to be finished. By the time Walter and I got back Terry had gotten lunch and was just a few minutes behind us.

Lunch of fried chicken and potato wedges was followed by a fury of activity as Terry had to get ready for her hair appointment, Walter & I had to scramble to get the place cards ready to be delivered to Casanova for the reception dinner, all before my makeup appointment at 3pm. Let's just say we "almost" made it in time. I was able to finish the Elephants by 1pm and do the last 5 pages of the scrapbook, pack an overnight bag, shower and change into my wedding cloths and help Walter finish up at 3pm. Off we went! (Oh yes, thanks to "The Aunts" who came by to pick up everything to be delivered to Casanova we weren't as late as we could have been) We arrived, I had a makeup session *shudder* I'm quite clueless when it comes to these these things. After that, Walter rushed us to the hotel to get ready for the photo shoot. The man for got to shave, ha ha. It was very busy in a very crowded area, I must say that I nearly swooned at the sight of so many well dressed good looking gentlemen. And the ladies were dressed like they're attending a ball, very lovely sight.

Major scrambling around for last minute items, ipods that has a certain song, ipods that work, batteries, etc etc. Then off to the wedding we go!

Since the wedding photographer charges by the hour, it was a major rush to get all the photos they want in. In the background I was busy with Dario and Katherine trying to get the ipod to work, just when it all looks dim and we'd all have to hum "Cannon in D", Andrea come out with an iSpeaker thingy. Three cheers for Andrea!

Wedding went off without much more excitement, couldn't really hear the music but *shrug* oh and the funny thing was you really couldn't hear the vows or anything. This is what it sounded like "Do you Terry take Walter to be your *wave crashes* to have and to hold in si- *wave crashes* till *wave crashes*". Yeah, the wave crashing pretty much drowned out everything but since we're all intelligent beings who watch way too much movies, we can fill in the blank. Did I mention that the bridal march song was "Over the Rainbow" the good version you know the one from the ending of "Finding Forrester" good song, dl it!

After the wedding most of us headed up to Casanova for the reception. I rode with Cousin Karen and Roger, since we did not have a GPS system like Uncle James, he took the lead. That was the longest ride in a very DIZZYING way, after talking with some locals, it seems uncle James took the long way up. We made it in one piece with only 1 mis-turn to all is good. Walter and Terry had booked the whole place for the night which was good.

The decoration that the Aunts and Terry's Co-worker did earlier that day was fabulous, it really transforms the place. The strategically placed photos of Walter and Terry taken in Taiwan was placed through out the restaurant, they made a little place for my scrapbook and flower everywhere! BEAUTIMOUS!

End of the night: Everyone liked my scrapbook! m(._.)mアリガト

Oh yes, I tried to avoid catching the bouquet by standing off to the side (works EVERY TIME!) Didn't dance cause I really don't know how, my limited repertoire includes the square patterned waltzy thing, a line dance, a circle dance, and even some salsa (thanks to Stephen's invitation). Since they weren't playing any classical, country, folk, nor Latin songs I was safely out of the ball park.

I was burning up by the evening's end and could barely make it home. Took some meds and fell asleep almost in the shower, I seriously sat in the cold water for as long as I could. At least I made it through the night eh?

Day 5

March 4Th

ARGH! the blue screen of TERROR! system shut down nearly at the end of one of the longest day of my blog, I don't really feel like writing down this whole thing again as it had been in my head as I write it, not technically on paper that I can just re-type it so those of you who's actually following this will just have to wait.

I dislike blog marathons when I don't have something prepared.
Summery:
  • Sunrise Tour (too ill to attend)
  • Farm Tour (was fun)
  • Brunch (very delicious) and the company was great, ppl biking got back mid Brunch and had exciting things to talk about the bike braking down, the person falling down, and people speeding down the mountain. People misplacing keys, talks about WoW that got interupted and never returned to *sigh*
  • The Flat (washed dishes and clean up the kitchen to give Terry 'n Walter who's had very little sleep a break)
  • Nap
  • Medicine
  • Nap
  • Reception Dinner
  • Sleep

Day 4

March 3nd

Ahh, Saturday! This day marks the beginning to Terry and Walter's 4-day wedding weekend. Tonight's event is a authentic Hawaiian Luau. But let's start at the beginning:

The days started much like another other days we've had only a little busier. Not long after waking I began to notice I had a headache, popped some Advil and went off to the farm with Terry to work on a shopping list for the Brunch the next day. Wow, that was some list. Wish I had brought my origami down with me. That was my task to prepare, 80+ origami and the scrapbook to finish before the wedding. I've created a scrapbook as their wedding present, I've just developed a very expensive hobby. Anyhow, off we go shopping. A list divided into two, Terry to Costco and Walter to everywhere else all the while he has to drop me off at Office Max to print more pictures for the scrapbook.

I was a little worried about the scrapbook, many fears ran through my mind as I created the pages. Was it too childish of a present to give? Will they like it? What would Terry's sophisticated big city friend think about it? Who was I kidding thinking I can make anything artistic? I have no coordination sense at all. But still, I wanted to give my sister and Walter something personal. Okay, digressing

It ended up my sister having to pick me up because our Uncle and party (Uncle, aunt, parents) arrived unscheduled. When we called back they were already there waiting, Uncle demanded to know how long it would take us to get back and Terry estimated 10. He started a count down, with every minute late it's a "Penalty". She sped the whole way home, I was a bit green afterwords.

We had lunch and then they left as we began to prepare for the brunch tomorrow. Cousins Debbie and Katherine finally arrived after getting lost only a few times, they apparently started driving in the wrong direction and Walter had to guide them back quite a few times. I totally understand!

Before we knew it, it was time to get ready for the Luau. Walter drove the Mini while Terry guided Debbie in the rental. We were stuck in traffic which made everyone nervous as to whether or not we'll make in on time, it seems the Luau had very strict rules due to it's popularity. There was a major bout of round robin cell phone. Some days I really don't miss having a cell phone. So traffic was back up for miles (I really do mean MILES) we heard people call who finally made it to the "other side" they claimed it took them over an hour. It took us close to an hour and half. When we finally arrived the folks at the Luau was very understanding as 1/2 of the guests seems to be in similar situation.

Food was delicious, waiter was nice, Bar tender was great. I have never been accused of being flirty, but apparently I don't know the meaning of it "flirt" I thought I was just being friendly. The show was interesting as it told a tale of Hawaiian mythology, however it was very disappointing as it did not have a fire dance.

By the time we arrived home everyone was exhausted. I thought about doing more Origami but that idea was shot down because my battle with the sniffles was lost and I was down for the count. My sister and Walter however valiantly continued to prepare for the next day's brunch.

Day 3

March 2nd

My Father arrived around noon. My sister and I drove around town to do more errand before picking up Father. Mum stayed at the flat to prepare lunch, I think she's had enough of sitting in the Mini and doing nothing. By the time we arrived at the airport Father's plane had already landed and the passengers were waiting for their luggage.

Oh boy howdy, this is where it gets a wee bit tense. Airline companies should have a "INTERNATIONAL TRAVELERS BEWARE" sign or at least a little note on the bottom of their ticket. Apparently it is common for international travelers who come in to Maui via Honolulu to not have their luggage arrive on the same flight. What happens (as it is explained to us by the airport luggage claim personnel) is that luggage from the international flight often do not make it to the domestic flights on time, so they have to be flown in on the next flight. It is a VERY good thing that they have flights coming in from Honolulu almost every 30 minutes. We only had to wait 15 minutes for Father's luggage to arrive.

We arrived home later than expected due to traffic and luggage issues. Good thing for the airline companies, nothing was broken in his luggage. Father was shipping some expensive tea sets as presents to Walter's parents and a framed jade artwork for my sister. We're very wary of checking these type of things because from past experience, no matter how well you pack your valuables, it'll get broken.

After my 3 hour wait in SFO I can tell you why. The luggage handlers just do not care. I watched 2 different flights be loaded and the same things happen. I even watched my own luggage be thrown onto the conveyor belt and I consider myself lucky. The luggage handlers just pull them off the cart and throw them on the conveyor belt the runs up to the belly of the aircraft. Should they fall off the belt because of bad positioning, or because the handlers accidentally knock them off, they leave them on the floor until he felt like picking them up. I saw a luggage that nearly reached the belly of the aircraft fall off, which is a nice long drop, and the handlers just left it there and it took another personnel who happened to be walking by to point it out to the two handlers. Very frightening.

Father napped after lunch while I played on my sister's X-box 360. I personally do not own any gaming consoles and I was reminded why after about 10 minutes of playing (I just get too dizzy).

I took a nap when my sister took our parents to check into the condo. Maui Kamaole offers great view and very relaxing rooms. It's not ocean front but let me tell you, it is HUGE compared to the ocean front view my cousins Debbie and Katherine were sharing with friends just down the road. It was two bedroom, two bathroom, a kitchen, living room and balcony. The two bedrooms where on separate floors so you really don't feel like sardines packed into a room.

My Uncle and his wife arrive later that evening.

Day 2

March 1st

Soon after we woke we began running errand around town w/my sister for the wedding. We got to go to her office and meet her new co-workers who seem to be very pleasant. The heat was getting to me, especially every time we had to wait for her in the car. Our cousin Karen and her boyfriend Roger had landed and checked into their hotel and were to meet us in the Cannery Mall for lunch.

In the mean time my sister had to make a delivery to what the locals consider "the other side". Maui is like one big island connected to a smaller one, there is only one way accessing the two sides. Should there be a forest fire (as it had a few years ago) the road way is closed and travelers on the "other side" are stuck and unless they travel by helicopter or by sea, they will not be able to the airport located on "this side". I'm sure there are technical names for the two sides, but as with all things Hawaiian, I can't remember them for the life of me! Road signs create an interesting dilemma for travelers, 99% of the street signs I've come in contact with are named after native words. So unless you have a great map or can memorize words like crazy, you'll tend to go like "turn right on WHAT?" or in my case "how do you spell that?" I've gotten to a point where I just look for landmarks and count turns, makes my life easier. Normally a trip to the "other side" is a 1/2 hour drive, however there seems to be new construction work or a spill that made this drive into an hour long tour. At least it was nice to stare at the ocean for a while.

So the restaurant was a Thai/Indian restaurant (I believe) the atmosphere was great however I must say the food was a bit lacking. There weren't much to chose from and the portion sizes was on the slimmer side. For those who were just looking for a light lunch it would have been great had the prices you pay weren't so high. I guess what I'm trying to say was the menu didn't match the image. The curry chicken w/Pan did not scream flavor like the menu had suggested. It was very bland in fact, the chicken had a over boiled feel to it and it was a very messy affair. The pan was very good though.

We walked around the mall a bit after our lunch and I was able to purchase a pair of green flip-flops which I thought would go nicely with my skirt for the wedding and for general usage. Actually, my sister bought it for me because many local merchants offer "kamaaina".

After a day full of driving and trying to acclimate myself to the heat I was done for by the time we returned.

Maui

It's been over a week since we've arrive on the island of Maui. Much has happened and I am just now getting all sorted out.

Feb 28th Day 1
We arrive early evening having been traveling since 9am this morning. When I first woke it was snowing like crazy and I had a moment of thought that it would be nice if I could just stay one more day in Boise and just play in the snow. The flights itself was fairly uneventful, the stop in SFO provided little in ways of entertainment. There was a gentleman on the gateway across the hall from ours juggling pins. Unfortunately his flight left soon after we arrived. I did get some good curry from the food court, there was so many choices as to what type of cuisine one wants. The most popular seems to be the Chinese food, I knew that I'll soon be getting all-you-can-eat Chinese food from authentic chefs, I chose to pass on that. Clam chowder, one of my all time favorite soups, was over priced and seemingly only served with sourdough bread bowl which I cannot abide, was passed over for a more filling looking chicken curry sold at the end of the food court by a Japanese vendor. I know that sounds like a mismatch but I assure you, the Japanese have a way with curry that make it most palpable to anyone who dares to try.

The flight from SFO to Maui was longer, meals were served at a cost of $5 USD. A Turkey wrap w/asparagus and sun dried tomatoes, a bag of french onion sun chips.

The Maui airport was somewhat of a surprise to me. Unlike the brightly lite, sterile enclosed environment of most airports I've been to, this one had a look of a log cabin when I first walked off the airplane. The humidity hit me right away, I though it was strange until I walked past the main corridor. There was open windows and doorways leading out, there was security personals but no major equipments and glass panels to keep non-travelers away. And the luggage claims were next to the parking lots which had no doors that I could see.

The sun set fairly quickly, one minute it was light the next we were walking in the dark. Parking was free for the 1st 1/2 hr and it was $1 charge after that, my sister having arrived earlier than her fiancee had to pay. I rode with Walter since I had no desire of being cramped in the back of my sister's Mini when there's a perfectly good shotgun seat opened. Couldn't see much of the roadside on our way to their flat, but I got the impression that it was very opened.
